Candle Safety Tips

At John’s Wicks, we prioritize the safety and satisfaction of our customers. Candles provide ambiance, fragrance, and warmth, but they also come with a responsibility to ensure safe usage. Below are some essential safety guidelines to ensure a risk-free experience with our candles.

Basic Candle Safety

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Ensure you are always in the room and awake while the candle is burning.
  2. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface where children and pets cannot reach them or knock them over.
  3. Avoid drafts. Place candles away from windows, vents, fans, or any air currents to prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and the potential for flare-ups.
  4. Maintain your wick. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax before lighting to ensure even burning and prevent the flame from becoming too large.
  5. Extinguish candles responsibly. Use a snuffer or a spoon to put out the flame. Blowing candles out can send sparks and hot wax flying.
  6. Keep away from flammable objects. Ensure candles are placed at least 3 feet away from curtains, bedding, books, flammable decorations, and other combustibles.

Safe Candle Usage

  1. Keep the wax pool clean. Ensure there are no wick trimmings, matches, or any combustible materials in the wax pool.
  2. Follow the burn time. It’s best not to burn candles for more than four hours at a time. If a candle has been burning for an extended period, extinguish it, let it cool for 2 hours, trim the wick, and then relight.
  3. Be cautious with container candles. As the candle nears the bottom, the container may become very hot. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the container’s base to prevent cracking or breaking.

Emergency Measures

  1. In case of any accidental spill of hot wax, avoid using water to clean. Let the wax cool and harden before cleaning.
  2. If a candle flame gets too high or starts to smoke, carefully extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and then relight.
  3. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand and familiarize yourself with its usage. Smoke detectors should also be installed and tested regularly.
